Ottawa - It's been almost a year since my last visit in Ottawa. The Rideau Centre's food court no longer exists. The new so-called dining hall, located on the second floor, is much more spacious, brighter and modernized. No more use of paper plates and plastic utensils. Stainless steel cutlery and sturdy plates are provided for a no-fuss eating experience. Once finished, the diners will return the tray to the collection centre where the staffs will do all the washing and cleaning - innovative and environmental friendly! In addition to the well-known fast food joints, there are new restaurants serving gourmet food. Their names might not ring a bell, but they sure attract a large crowd for those who are seeking novelty.

I tried a couple of the new places, one that caught my curiosity was the grilled cheese sandwich place named MLT DWN. Quite an innovative name as we can read many words even though the vowels are missing. Some items in their menu follow the same example like RSTD VEG, BRK FST, CHSCAKE. I don't think we have any restaurants in Montreal that specialize in grilled cheese sandwiches apart from food trucks, P. A. Gargantua and Le Cheese. I'm not very fond of their sandwiches though as their bread has a similar texture to a bread that comes out from a toaster. After eating the grilled cheese sandwiches at MLT DWN, the taste and texture was hundred times better than the ones served in Montreal. I had the pulled pork sandwich which comes jalapeno, aged cheddar and bbq sauce on sourdough bread. The bread was crisp yet not too crunchy, smoky and juicy pulled pork, complemented with the sweetness of the caramelized onions and a bit of kick from the jalapeno. It has the right amount of cheese to bind everything together. I'm also surprised with their smores dessert. The bread was soft almost cake-like, not at all crispy. The filing has every component that would remind you of a s'more.
